Thirty minutes north of Manhattan, The
Castle on the Hudson majestically over-
looks the Hudson River on eleven sprawl-
ing hilltop acres of manicured gardens
and grounds. With over 100 years of histo-
ry, the castle offers a regal escape to
enchanted days of yesteryear.
Built in two stages between 1897 and 1910
by the son of a Civil War general, the
grounds are enclosed by a stone wall and
support a veritable arboretum of ever-
greens and rare varieties of trees, grass-
lands and flowers. Its main tower rises 75
feet, making it the highest point in
Westchester County. Much of the original
interior woodwork and furnishings, which
were built by a team of carpenters
brought from Germany, still remain intact.
Designed for graceful living and entertain-
ing, today the castle has been renovated
into a luxury hotel.
Almost three decades ago, the town of
Tarrytown designated the Castle a historic
landmark,protecting the outside structure
from ever being changed. The restoration
of the castle's original suites, which offer
spectacular views - as well as wood burn-
ing fireplaces in some cases - along with a
new 24-room addition named
Carrollcliffe, salute this site's proud her-
itage. Bringing the Castle fully up-to-date
are recent innovations such as a state-of-
the-art fitness center, a heated outdoor
swimming pool and a tennis court.
