Even when planners are familiar with an
area, a visitors bureau still knows what is
The locations of many small CVBs make
them more appealing to planners on a

budget. Many of the cities within these
locations have thriving downtowns with-

attendees from the East Coast to drive to
their destination for convenience. Small
regional and international airports also
facilitate easy transportation from other
cities,without the commuting crowds and
with the added benefit of free shuttles to
and from local hotels.
Greater Wilmington boasts the 10th
busiest train station in the country due its
position on the Northeast corridor. For
both the Valley Forge and Wilmington
CVBs, major highways also run directly
through the areas making directions sim-
ple from most major cities.
Tonya Petrunak, vice president of market-
ing and sales for the Greater Reading
Convention and Visitors Bureau, enjoys
the travel advantage of her area.
Drivability offers just enough space to sep-
arate from the office, but still retain work-
ing hours.
Unique venues in Greater Reading range
from bed-and-breakfasts to LEED-certified
green buildings to a recreated Pagoda
overlooking the city. Participants only
need to drive an hour or two to reach this
captivating destination.
Also just a few hours from the office, the
Pocono Mountains possess 80 percent of
Pennsylvania’s resorts. This region has
attracted destination travelers for over 200
years. According to Jackson, the resorts of
the Pocono Mountains offer many recre-
ational options, yet they do not seem to
have as many distractions as larger resort
areas.
Community
Petrunak believes that because her com-
munity is small, her members participate
more with each event - helping arrange
gift bags, donating items, and offering
speakers. Petrunak sites the community’s
friendliness as a defining attribute of the
Reading area.
