When It Comes
to Small Meetings
Forget 411
Local convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs) specialize in
knowing the most about their member venues and vendors, offering
this insight and a wide range of assistance to meeting and event
planners. The best part is that the vast majority of these services are
available on a complimentary basis.
Esther Lovlie, director of sales and marketing for meetings, events, and group tours at
the Greater Wilmington,Delaware Convention andVisitors Bureau summed up the role
of the CVB perfectly,“We may not have all of the answers, but in the cases where we
don’t,we do know who will.”
All convention and visitors bureaus have the same goal, to attract bookings for meet-
ings and events within their vicinity. To do so,they offer help in a number of ways;assist-
ing in whatever ways they can to make events and meetings successful for planners
and their venue members alike.
Marc Kaminetsky, national sales manager for the LehighValley Convention andVisitors
Bureau, furthers this point by listing one of his many roles as a“match-maker”between
planners and suppliers in his local community.
He says that, for the interested planner, each bureau has a “rolodex” of locations suit-
able for every type of meeting. After a conversation about the client’s vision, the CVB
can offer recommendations for everything from venues to transportation to profes-
sional speakers and more.
This has value on many levels, and can be of great benefit to planners of meetings and
events of all shapes and sizes. But for those groups with limited resources, these
bureaus provide an invaluable service. Planners of meetings and events with smaller
groups stand to benefit a great deal.
