Small Meetings Shine
Meetings depend on location for the best
possible medium when it comes to infor-
mation sharing, and this is especially true
of small,intimate meetings.
According to Sharon Altland, she enjoys
working with planners of small meetings
due to the flexible nature of hosting a more
intimate group. While the Hershey
Harrisburg area does offer expansive ven-
ues like the Carlisle Expo Center and the
Hershey Lodge and Convention Center,
meetings under 100 people can utilize the
many unique venues and distinctive areas
here that showcase the history and imagi-
nation of Pennsylvania.
Even when planners are familiar with an
area, a visitors bureau still knows what is
new, what has been updated, and the gen-
eral happenings within each meeting and
event space in their community.
Altland concludes that planners, even
those from the area or who have hosted
events previously in the Hershey-
Harrisburg region, might not be up-to-date
with all renovations or closings. She notes
that many times her staff has assisted with
creating itineraries for events. Recently,one
sales manager at the bureau even offered
to work at a registration table on a Sunday
in order to help a planner who was in a
pinch.
Planners of small meetings
should, at the very minimum,
keep the CVB of the destination
at which they plan to hold their
events“in their loop.”After all,as
a planner,you never know when
you’ll need an extra hand to
deliver welcome bags or when
you might benefit from an insid-
er who can help to negotiate
lower contract costs.
