Spinnaker: Where Partnerships Are as Important as Technology

By Carlos Ferreira, Process Technician — SMT, Spinnaker Contract Manufacturing I

n the high-mix world of domestic contract manufacturing, having the right tools for a variety of dif-

ferent products is vital. To one New England-based EMS company, Spin- naker Contract Manufacturing, hav- ing the right partner to provide the tools is just as important. One such partner is Kurtz Ersa North Ameri- ca. In its endeavor to provide consis- tent quality and service, Spinnaker purchased a Versaflow 3/45 selective soldering system and expects to cut its processing time by up to 75 per- cent.

Spinnaker emphasizes automation to bolster its procedures, keep delivery

on time, assure competitive pricing, and to promote lean manufacturing.

Located in Tilton, New Hamp-

shire, Spinnaker offers a full range of product assembly services, which in- clude turnkey manufacturing, PCB assembly, custom wire harness as- sembly, and a complete offering of

test solutions. The company strives to develop

partnerships with customers to grow profitably through close communica- tion and responsive customer service. Its 38,000 square foot, state-of-the-

Sharing a similar men- tality was a key factor in Spinnaker’s decision to work with Kurtz Ersa. The company purchased Ersa’s

Versaflow 3/45 selective soldering system near the end of last year, and Ersa was on hand to get the system up and running quickly. According to Spinnaker’s president Guy Nicker- son, operators are noticing a signifi- cant improvement in speed, and he expects the machine to soon be able to cut processing times from 20 min- utes down to 5, or even 3 minutes. The system has made the company’s production process run much more smoothly. The Versaflow 3/45 is a popular

and widely used in-line selective sol- dering platform, and is valued for its
