Improving track and ride quality on the nation’s rail network

hile Network Rail is facing a reported £70m fine from the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) for underperforming to timetable, Diamond Point International (DPI) and Infrastructure Measurement Solutions (IMS) have been busy designing a cost-effective system to record track derived issues


that result in unacceptable ride quality.


This is known to have a knock-on effect on meeting timetable goals.


The ‘Bump box’, as it has been affectionately called, has been designed to be cost-effective enough to be considered for use on all trains currently running, allowing Network Rail and its partners to develop a

This data can also be used in trending algorithms to help improve an operator’s ability to predict when maintenance is required and to prevent unacceptable levels of shock and vibration, helping to prevent total failure.
