‘The job has been made much easier thanks to the new lighting’
David Barnwell, director of product and market development at Holophane Europe Ltd, discusses Holophane’s Haloprism and how it can reduce maintenance costs and energy consumption whilst increasing lighting levels.

ollowing the hugely successful launch debut of the Holophane Haloprism luminaire at Luxlive
2013, where the product won the Interior Luminaire of the Year award, the luminaire was installed into a production area adjacent to some existing 400W Multi Vapour highbay fixtures on a one for one basis. The objective was to reduce maintenance costs by eliminating the need for re-lamping whilst improving the lighting levels achieved and reducing energy consumption.
By installing the 39,000 lumen Haloprism luminaires the average light levels (Eav lx) went from 550lux to 1215lux – an improvement of 55%. Although the light level was more than double the original lighting, total power consumption was reduced from 8.8kW to 7.3kW, resulting in a reduction in total load prior to dimming of 17.5% and saving 3,525Kg of CO2 per annum.
A Holophane HOLOS2 lighting control system has also been installed to allow the Haloprism luminaires to be switched to three different levels of intensity using DALI protocol. Dimming the Haloprism luminaires down to 40% and achieving an average lighting level of 600lux (Eav lx), a 10% improvement on the existing lighting, resulted in a total power consumption reduction from 8.8kW to 2.9kW. There was a reduction in total load of

After normal working hours, the luminaires can be switched down for non-essential tasks such as cleaning the production area and the level can be further reduced for security lighting at night when the operatives have left for the day.
Alongside the improved lighting levels, energy and CO2 savings, it also delivers superior vertical illumination thanks to the precise control of Haloprism’s prismatic glass refractor system. The system life of 100,000 hours is assured due to the drivers being located in a ventilated chamber at the centre of the luminaire and excellent lumen maintenance is facilitated by the self-cleaning Venturi effect of passing warm air up through the fitting thus carrying dust and dirt away from the low static glass optic.
The factory manager was delighted with the savings achieved and the increase in both light levels & quality of light, saying: “When we replaced the existing highbay luminaires with the Haloprism we were expecting to save energy and eliminate costly maintenance but we were surprised and delighted by the improvement in the feel of the lighting. The light level is noticeably higher and the ceiling and walls are also lit more effectively, resulting in
a more pleasing working environment.”

and the job has been made much easier thanks to the new lighting. Once the new lighting was installed no-one wanted to work in the other part of the assembly area where the old lighting remained.”
The controllability of the LED source combined with the precise prismatic optics and highly efficient lumen package offered by the Haloprism luminaire add up to a genuine highbay retrofit package and one that also improves the visual environment too.
