Safer digging on the rail network


Tony Rush, marketing director at Radiodetection, explains the benefits of the C.A.T4 and Genny4.


As


safety-critical tools, the C.A.T4 and Genny4 offer a number of features


designed to support safe working and to help drive down cable strike rates across the UK’s rail network.


Radiodetection’s powerful Dynamic Overload Protection signal processing capabilities equip the C.A.T4 products with the ability to reject spurious signals caused by electrical interference. This enables the products to operate reliably in electrically challenging areas, such as beneath overhead power cables and around substations.


Simultaneous dual frequency operation and the ‘Signal Boost’ function, which enables signals to travel further and deeper, assist C.A.T4 and Genny4 users during otherwise difficult locates. These techniques are particularly useful for locating small diameter wiring such as


signalling cables, telecom twisted pairs, spurs and drop-offs, which have historically been hard to find and which represent a common strike risk.


C.A.T4 and Genny4 retain the familiar C.A.T operating interface first introduced by Radiodetection in the mid-1980s offering simple and intuitive locating. They have been designed for full reverse-compatibility, and all Genny3 accessories, for example, are compatible with Genny4.


Included in the C.A.T4 range are the eC.A.T4 series products, which can store over a year’s worth of data from the locator, such as mode of use, date and time of survey, and depth measurements made. This information


assists managers in verifying


correct and safe usage, and in identifying the training needs of their teams.


eC.A.T4 units can also provide a 31-day ‘service due’ countdown warning on start-up. CALSafe–enabled units can even be configured to automatically deactivate on expiry of the defined calibration interval,


to


help ensure compliance with individual company policies.

Delivering power and infrastructure for rail


Morrison Utility Services has launched a new division to deliver infrastructure and maintenance projects to rail sector clients. Public relations manager Paul Gilbert explains.


M


orrison Rail Services provides comprehensive design, installation


and commissioning of HV and LV power for rail projects, covering a broad range of asset engineering services. These include:


• Substations


• Stations and depots • Switchgear/plant


• HV cable-laying, jointing and terminations • Power requirements for signalling, points heating and lighting • Protection and control systems • DNO connections and networks

infrastructure electrical projects. “From planning and design, through to construction and maintenance, the team’s specialist knowledge will enable the effective delivery of engineering service solutions to our rail sector clients,” he said. “With full rail accreditations that allow us to operate on projects for Network Rail and others, we can ensure delivery to the highest standards of quality and safety commensurate to the sector.”


Morrison Rail Services is already playing both lead and collaborative roles on a number of high-profile projects. These include the £1.2m Sussex transformer renewals project, undertaken on behalf of Network Rail, which centres on the renewal of 4Nº rectifier transformers and rectifier units and associated equipment at the Merstham, Preston Park, Redhill and Salfords substations. Scheduled to run to July 2014, the project incorporates complex staging designs to ensure railway service remains unaffected by the renewal works, with a value engineering approach and modern construction methods deployed to avoid daily HV switch-outs and to ensure the state performance and reliability of the Sussex electrification system is maintained.
