Lift services to the rail industry


Peter Perry, service director for Stannah Lift Services, says that the company may not be the first name that springs to mind when you are thinking about lift, escalator and moving walkway supply, installation, refurbishment and maintenance – but that is exactly the lift services Stannah has been supplying to the rail industry for the last decade.

or almost 150 years Stannah has remained a resolutely independent British business.


By remaining true to its family values and taking care to look after our people and customers, Stannah has been quietly successful, expanding to have operating companies across the UK and all over the world.


At the heart of this work is a strong but simple promise that defines our position within the industry: ‘always true to our word’. This reflects the way we go about business – with care, fairness and practicality – in order to provide life-and work-enhancing products and services to our customers.


Although Stannah is world-renowned for stairlifts, it is a single organisation with many specialities: passenger and platform lifts, goods and service lifts, stairlifts, escalators, moving walkways and related lift services, including lift refurbishment and bespoke lifts.

Stannah Lift Services has recently been awarded a further 10-year contract with Network Rail to maintain all its station lift stock across the length and breadth of the UK. This working partnership began in 1995, with a renewed 10-year contract awarded in 2004.


Stannah has maintained all Network Rail’s existing lift stock and in addition, refurbished lift equipment and installed new lifts and escalators. As part of the ‘Access for All’ (AfA) programme of station improvements, funded by the DfT and delivered by Network Rail, the


Stannah has completed more than 120 lift refurbishments for Network Rail across the UK. Typical projects include the removal of existing lifts, repair of the lift shaft, replacement or refurbishment of the machine room equipment, installation of the new lift car and associated building work, sometimes taking on the role of main contractor.


The scope of many projects requires extensive expertise in specialist areas. This is provided by Stannah’s Major Projects Team, experts in health and safety, construction, design and manufacture, technical training, and installation and maintenance.

Jon Stannah, joint managing director, explained: “Our work within the rail sector has grown significantly in the last 10 years. Our renewed contract with Network Rail and a further contract with the DLR will mean our engineers will be working day and night in order to prevent downtime for the thousands of railway travellers across the network every day.”


Nationwide network of branches


Work is undertaken via Stannah Lift Services’s nationwide network of 11 local branches and is managed centrally by a dedicated department that meets regularly with Network Rail project managers and asset stewards.


Major projects across the rail network have included:


• Two new escalators and lifts at London’s Paddington station;


• 24 new lifts at King’s Cross station and one lift refurbishment;


• More than 30 new escalators and several lifts as part of the Birmingham New Street regeneration project;


• Lifts at Edinburgh’s Waverley station, including a stunning duplex that provides a view over the city;


• Lifts and escalators at Edinburgh’s Haymarket station;


• Nine passenger lifts installed at Clapham Junction, where previously no lifts existed.


Our priority is quite simply to meet the needs of our customers and support them as lift owners/users. We aim to provide service of the highest quality, quickly and efficiently.


Our lift engineers are highly trained to work on all types of lifts and escalators – our own equipment and those from other manufacturers – providing 24/7 call-out, 365 days a year, right across the UK.


Our in-house health and safety experts ensure the safety of lift passengers, customers and engineers. This care has been recognised with five RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Gold Awards.
