LED lighting for Paddington station’s fourth span by iGuzzini.
Light first
iGuzzini is an international lighting company at the forefront of LED technology and the integration of lighting and architecture. With an ever-growing demand to reduce energy use whilst improving the quality of lighting and maintaining safety in public areas, the growth of LED technology has had an immediate impact, and has turned the world of lighting technology on its head. Mark Cooper,, national sales manager (public realm) for iGuzzini UK, takes a look at some recent projects and how these have achieved the aims of the client, designer and end user to meet today’s challenging environments.

oday’s public spaces are being transformed from functional spaces to architectural spaces with interest, beauty and a more comfortable feeling with the ability to inspire and encourage the users to stay, linger and spend time and money in the facilities provided. iGuzzini has been involved in a number of challenging and innovative project solutions
T over the years. These have included
Paddington station, Crossrail, London King’s Cross station and North Greenwich.
For Paddington station’s fourth span, working together with Oxford Architects, WSP, Morgan Sindall and GIA Equation, our design brief was to provide a high output and effi cient light source. Traditionally, fl oodlighting such structures would have involved the use of ‘HID’ (High Intensity Discharge) projectors located on the façade with unsightly fi xing systems. These traditional methods consume high levels of energy, and also require regular maintenance schedules – something that is not easily achievable when trying to access luminaires mounted high up on the structure.
New LED lighting technology allows us to
completely change the way we design lighting schemes for modern architecture, and due to the mounting height and restricted access where the luminaires were to be placed, iGuzzini provided the

Woody LED as a solution, using ‘Warm White’ LEDs to enhance the colour of the fi nished ceiling panels. This included improvements to the overall lighting, and sympathetically highlights the rib structure and ceiling details.
iGuzzini is currently involved in the design and supply of customised lighting solutions for the Crossrail project, and has worked closely with the client team contractor, Atkins and GIA Equation, to develop the architectural components to be used across the network. This includes the general lighting from the totem uplighters and wayfi nding systems, along with the integrated escalator uplighter systems and associated emergency lighting. These units all use innovative LED and optical systems to provide the required illumination with minimal maintenance and energy consumption.
The work at London King’s Cross again involved working closely with the lighting designer, Studio Fractal, to develop a unique solution to illuminate the large plaza area at the front of the station
Platform lighting requires additional concerns to be taken account of – those of weather, minimal refl ectance, and control of glare for train drivers and members of the public, all whilst highlighting platform edges to ensure safety whilst boarding
and alighting from trains.
However, the use of clever optics, design and intelligent LED drivers allow for all of these challenges to be met and exceeded. Indeed, the self-developed drivers within our ‘Wow’ and ‘Archilede’ HP range allows for L90 F10 fi gures to be achieved at 100,000 hours. This is through not only mechanical thermal design, but also clever electronics that monitors and controls the junction temperature of the LEDs and also the ambient temperature of the driver compartment.
Over the years iGuzzini’s products have won
numerous international design awards from iF, Red Dot, Design Index ADI, Compasso d’Oro, Lighting Design Awards, Arc Innovation, Lux Live Awards, World Interior News Awards and WAN. Our products (standard and customised) are designed to complement the architecture and space and are engineered to the highest standards. These products provide a fully integrated, sustainable and practical design solution for all spaces be they indoors or outdoors.
