Recruitment

Frazer-Nash has already played an important part in the NEP and has secured key contracts with Network Rail

by Investors in People and professional institutions. Career progression for engineers is

as broad as it can possibly be. Engineers at Frazer-Nash can choose to develop as technical specialists, as managers of engineering teams or into business management. Opportunities exist to try different areas of career development before committing to permanent roles.

Innovation in the industry Examples of rail projects which illustrate the diverse and engaging nature of the work at Frazer-Nash include the Radical Train project and safety engineering on the National Electrification Programme (NEP). The Radical Train project undertaken

for the Enabling Innovation Team (EIT) was an exciting opportunity to seek

out and demonstrate game-changing innovations in the rolling stock industry. Frazer-Nash was appointed to manage this project on behalf of EIT because of its proven capability in technology management and its cross-industry approach.

The project aimed to develop a

portfolio of demonstrator projects providing a significant step change in the performance of trains on UK railways, and to develop new technology which might also have international market potential. Frazer-Nash promoted and ran an open competition across industry and academia to elicit innovative ideas, with more than 65 propositions pre-qualifying. These propositions were then assessed jointly by the Frazer-Nash team and a stakeholder group representing rolling stock buyers and users. A shortlist was agreed and a rigorous process of technical and commercial due diligence then undertaken by Frazer-Nash, leading to a managed investment programme being planned out for EIT. Seven of the innovation projects have been funded by EIT as a result of this work, covering areas such as light weighting rolling stock through use of composites, improved bogie designs and kinetic energy recovery and storage.

Rail is a core market Frazer-Nash has already played an important part in the NEP and has secured key contracts with Network Rail based on its capability to bring knowledge of equipment which, while being used for the first time in rail, is already in use in other sectors. The involvement began with working alongside the Network Rail team developing the electrification control and protection system and providing input on safety engineering issues from the early stages. As the control system has developed into designs for use in the electrification schemes around the UK network, Frazer-Nash has been developing the safety cases for many of these schemes. More recently, Network Rail selected Frazer-Nash to develop safety cases for the Supervisory Controls system to be used in the NEP. This contract award reinforces Frazer-Nash’s position as a key supplier of safety engineering services in the rail industry, which the company sees as a core market for continued business growth.
