Cable Detection is making cable avoidance even safer and easier with the launch of its new dedicated Training Academy

S

taffordshire-based Cable Detection, part of Hexagon, manufactures and sells buried service location equipment. The company supplies major contractors responsible for Network Rail maintenance services, and as such its i500 and i600 Series are Network Rail approved and were first to gain NR approval on a 3 watt transmitter. The use of cable avoidance tools to locate buried services is common practice in the rail industry while undertaking the pre-dig survey. However, if staff are not adequately trained to use the equipment, cables and pipes are often not detected and can be struck during excavation. The result is serious personal injury or at the

very least, costly and time-consuming repairs. For example in 2011 on a Network Rail project, an 11kV cable strike occurred outside of a railway boundary which resulted in a 90 minute cut to power lines. In the same month, a gas main strike 100 metres from the railway led to an exclusion zone which closed the railway for more than an hour. The cost of these two incidents alone totalled £180,000. The pitfalls of striking buried cables and pipes may be well-known in terms of injury to site workers or disruption of supply, but what is probably less well known is how easy it is to guard against such situations: the Health and Safety Executive Guidance (HSG47)

recommends that ‘anyone who uses a locator should have received thorough training in its uses and limitations’.

The EZi solution to cable avoidance Cable Detection has provided cable avoidance training across the UK for more than 13 years and January 2014 saw the opening of its dedicated new training academy, as well as the appointment of Simon Pedley as training manager. Pedley has been with Cable Detection for more than 10 years and has extensive experience in using the EZiSYSTEM cable and pipe locating system. Chris Swetnam, managing director said: ‘All our experienced trainers deliver high quality cable avoidance courses
