s a market-leading critical power specialist, Socomec has developed a broad range of fully integrated products and services - drawing

the European rail sector since the company’s strategic decision to invest in this market in 2011, Socomec launched a range of advanced critical power solutions earlier this year – including the IP+ UPS Rail range - specifically engineered for the unique requirements of UK rail sector, ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of rail networks and infrastructure. Andrew Wilkinson, regional managing


director, commented: ‘Through market investigation and as part of our development work, we identified that the UK rail sector was not taking advantage of the critical power technology developments that are available in industrial and data centre


designed to support vital rail applications. Fuserbloc – high quality fuse combination switches – protect against overload and provide a robust supply to life safety and signalling systems. AtyS - automatic transfer and bypass switches – guarantee standby and alternate power availability, supporting trackside power supplies, safety systems, signalling and infrastructure. We also understand how important it is for our rail customers to retain control over their costs both in terms of cost management and allocation. For energy metering and quality management, Countis and Diris – single and three phase active energy meters, power measurement devices and network analysers – support sub-metering and sub-billing requirements when used in conjunction with Vertelis software.’


Integrating technology According to Wilkinson: ‘At Socomec we are increasingly looking at how we can integrate technology from each of our four business applications – critical power; energy efficiency; power control & safety and solar - in order to provide systems that improve the performance of critical buildings and facilities. Proven in the market, the latest Socomec UPS, emergency lighting and power, control and safety technology has already been successfully deployed as part of high profile projects such as the King’s Cross station re-development. Current projects include Metrolink and London Bridge.


Metrolink A well-engineered and maintained critical power system is vital to the smooth operation and safety of the Metrolink network – including rail signaling and communications equipment. As part of a £1.4 billion expansion, Socomec UPS has been selected by Manchester’s Metrolink light railway to manage the introduction of its latest uninterruptible power supply (UPS) technology in a major upgrade to the Metrolink critical power infrastructure. The business has been tasked with replacing and reconfiguring nearly thirty UPS and battery systems within stop equipment rooms serving key rail lines – one of the most significant developments in the network’s history.
