Keep rolling with Eversholt Rail

versholt Rail Group is one of the UK’s rolling stock companies, owning approximately one third of the national passenger
fleet. Since its formation, Eversholt Rail has invested more than £2 billion in the purchase of new rolling stock and refurbishment of existing rolling stock. Its passenger stock portfolio comprises 3,474 vehicles, of which more than 3,100 are electric–powered. In addition the company owns 920 freight wagons and 83 freight locomotives.
Eversholt Rail understands that major investment is needed to improve and maintain rail in the UK and the need to deliver this cost effectively and efficiently. While a growing rail market will require more new rolling stock, we also strongly believe in the possibilities offered by quality refurbishment of existing rolling stock. This can be delivered at a fraction of the cost of new rolling stock without compromising on passenger comfort or service.’
Upgrades and refurbishments In recent months the company has unveiled a number of fleet upgrades and refurbishments. This has included improvements to the Class 318 and 320 fleets, in partnership with ScotRail. The most ambitious recent project was unveiled in December 2013, when, in partnership with Abellio Greater Anglia and Wabtec, the Class 321 Demonstrator
was launched at Liverpool Street Station. The train has undergone a high-specification refurbishment and technology upgrades and will run in normal service on the Abellio Greater Anglia network for a year. Through the Class 321 activity, Eversholt Rail aims to gain passenger feedback on the new and enhanced features, to help inform the decisions of franchise bidders and show what can be achieved through refurbishment. The four-car unit features two suburban style and two metro style carriages. In the suburban carriages, existing seats have been refurbished and raised, while there is all-new seating in the metro carriages, which also feature an extended entrance area. In addition, the entire unit has new air conditioning and heating systems; energy efficient LED lighting; modern double glazed fixed windows; and better wheelchair areas. The First Class area has new power operated doors, power sockets and leather seats. Most of the products and systems being demonstrated are from UK based suppliers. A new traction system is also being developed and will be installed during 2015.
On its launch Mary Kenny said: ‘We are delighted that the Demonstrator unit is being launched into service on the Abellio Greater Anglia route. It is a fantastic demonstration of the possibilities offered by quality refurbishment at an attractive cost. We hope as many people as possible travel on the Demonstrator and give us feedback on the new features and the overall experience, to help us to improve the trains for passengers in the future.’

Over the next five years, the company expects to invest around £1.5 billion on maintenance and refurbishment of the current asset portfolio and acquisition of new rolling stock. This is a pivotal time for the industry, with the long- term Passenger Rolling Stock strategy published in 2013 forecasting a 50-100 per cent increase in the UK rolling stock fleet over the next 30 years and the Department for Transport moving towards passenger franchises of 7 to10 years.
