Risk under control Carillion implemented the HAVmeter – the industry standard for monitoring and managing HAV exposure and operator tool management – in 2011 when work at Glasgow Central station began. Long estimated that by adopting the system, Carillion has saved an estimated £3,000 in labour costs alone over the past 18 months, in terms of the time taken to record data and compile reports. The HAVmeter completely automates the entire monitoring, data collection and reporting process – from operator exposure levels to detailed records of tool usage – so managers can proactively manage HAVS risk, plan efficient tool allocation and improve worker efficiency. Long said: ‘As with any project of this nature, there are several and serious health and safety risks to mitigate against, including live adjacent railway and overhead line equipment, plant movements and engineering trains.
