fter several months of testing BOC’s new oxygen (O2) GENIE® gas cylinder with Network Rail for use on
maintenance works, the product has proven to be well-suited for manoeuvring into hard-to-access locations. The GENIE cylinder is ideal for railway engineers who need to carry out aluminothermic welding activities and/ or cutting work. Often, they need to carry a cylinder of compressed oxygen through difficult strategic access points, sometimes at night, to allow access to the rail infrastructure.
Engineers and managers from
Network Rail subjected the O2GENIE cylinder to a wide range of extreme locations and temperature changes and also incorporated various processes that NR uses to weld and repair rail defects. The trial has concluded, with data provided from the users, that the cylinder meets the primary requirements for manual handling and production issues. It also reduces wear and tear on the vehicle fleet and, for the first time ever, Network Rail can now manage and budget the gas it uses on a shift basis.

3D measurement for railway bearing quality control

ision systems integrator, Olmec UK, has designed a turnkey laser height system for inspecting bearings used in the rail
industry. Using an LMI Gocator 3D smart camera, which includes an integrated laser source and optics and provides on- board processing of 3D data, the system measures the height of various bearings used in bogies in the rail industry. The bearing consists of a number of different components and if any part is missing the height of the bearing will differ from that expected.
The Gocator 2050 sensor is mounted over the existing conveyor on the OE
Line and offers a field of view of 158 – 365mm and a measurement depth range of 400 mm. Bearings with a height range of 125 mm to 285 mm are measured to a tolerance of +/- 1 mm. The system provides a simple recipe selection and sensor management interface based on Olmec’s VP3 touch screen user interface, complete with multi-layer security so that only authorised personnel can allow adjustment of the sensor or measurement parameters.
The Gocator records profile images and measures the height of the finished product. If the height of the component is not within the expected tolerances, the conveyor belt is
stopped and an audible alarm is raised as well as displayed on the touch screen. An integrated industrial PC is connected to the Gocator for management of the overall system. Error handling and interfacing to the existing process is handled using a programmable logic controller.
