Independence day S

pecialist in passenger information software, LPT-IT, has launched viasINFOPOINT, a product that provides visually impaired passengers with the opportunity to receive passenger-related information without requiring the assistance of another person. Every day, the capability of visually impaired passengers to independently navigate stations, bus terminals, airports and shopping malls is challenged. In each of the given locations information displays, e.g. travel information is often centrally located where most passengers/ guests pass by.

These information displays may be elevated and hung from ceilings or on the walls, and typically traffic around these displays is chaotic and stressful – especially at peak times. People who are running late, who wish to confirm the travel information that they might have already received on their smartphones; first timers or inexperienced users - all of them are on-the-go and in a hurry to get somewhere.

Removing barriers Taking a look to get confirmation of our location and having visual information/ references on where to go, timings and so forth, is vital. In addition to the physical and psychological atmosphere surrounding the visual information points, the displays often show the content in relatively small fonts. Depending on the size and location of the display, the trend seems to be, the bigger and busier the station the smaller and more information is on display. The lack of certainty that information has been gathered correctly set against the wish to independently navigate the premises is hard enough for the non- visually impaired. For those who cannot see at all and the visually impaired, the situation is much more challenging and the questions become: How are you to obtain information? and Are you able to navigate the premises independently? The European Disability Strategy 2010-2020 was adopted on 15 November 2010*

. The strategy is to ensure that persons with disabilities have the right to participate fully and equally in society. It consist of eight priority areas: accessibility, participation, equality, employments, education and training,

viasINFOPOINT is a modular software which can be added as an extension to your current PIS system. The application has a small, embedded Linux controller con-

social protection, health and external action.

The second priority: participation,

states: ‘ensure that people with disabilities enjoy all benefits of EU citizenship; remove barriers to equal participation in public life and leisure activities; promote the provision of quality community-based services.’ While this is a noble and ensured human right within the European Union, it is far from commonly executed throughout public transportation.

The opportunity to welcome all The viasINFOPOINT automatically provides audio announcements of the content which is on display on the monitor. It has a built-in infrared sensor that detects when a person is present underneath a soundshower. The viasINFOPOINT can have optional braille buttons installed near the device to offer users skip buttons or the choice of multiple languages.

The viasINFOPOINT can help fulfill your obligation to ensure the free movement and participation in public life

The viasINFOPOINT from LPT-IT is another step forward in enhancing the travel experience of the visually impaired

of people who are visually impaired. It will enhance their opportunity to be able to independently navigate the railway and truly enjoy rail facilities. With a few very effective measures you can change the experience of your facility to welcome all. LPT recommends installing the viasINFOPOINT in an environment away from crowds where a sphere can be created and where noise is at a minimum, to provide the user with a sense of time and tranquility. The advantage of creating such a sphere is that it provides a space where the user can calmly receive the required information and repeat the exercise if needed without feeling stressed by the surroundings. Another reason for placing the viasINFOPOINT strategically away from the crowds is that this ensures the infrared detection is not activated unintentionally.
