John Iandolo – a second year track engineering apprentice ‘I’ve always been fascinated by the railways and wanted to work on them, so when the opportunity came, I applied to get on the London Underground Track Engineering Apprentice scheme. I’ve now been on the scheme for 15 months and have worked on the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines.
‘I am primarily involved with inspection and maintenance of the tracks to ensure that we can keep customers safe and moving. I also get to go on different work placements across the network as part of the scheme including ultrasonics, track lubrication and civil engineering. I feel privileged to belong to London Underground as it continually provides support and training to all its staff proving they really try to excel through their workforce.

I’ve recently joined the Surveying department and in a couple of years I hope to learn from other departments about the roles they play to support the running of the transport network. In the future I would also like to work on other railways around the world to develop and widen my skills.’

In the future, I would love the chance to work my way towards Hand Back Engineer and/or PM4 inspector. With the Northern line extension project being in its planning stages, I couldn’t think of anything more exciting and challenging than having the opportunity to play a role in its construction.’

The Rail Operations Group has developed a new driving training programme, entitled “EuroDriver”. This modular format programme is linked to a state of the art electronic competence management system, which will allow progress assements to be made after each module. Eurodriver is risk based, ensuring the risks and associated precursor events identified in the risk registers are addressed. The training methodology employed is partly based on self learning, e-learning plus a mix of theoretical and practical sessions.
