Meeting future risk and safety demands
The Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education outlines its new higher education railway programme - the Master of Science in Railway Risk and Safety Management
S
even railway accidents occurred in 2013, within six months, including the catastrophic derailment of a speeding train in Spain, the
devastating fire caused by derailed petroleum wagons in Canada and the head-on collision in Switzerland. The growing intensity of railway operations increases the inherent risk and the consequent disruption. Higher speeds and the transport of more hazardous goods result in greater impacts, once accidents occur. Railways and rail regulatory bodies need more staff trained in the assessment and management of railway- related risk and safety.
The Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) at the
University of Birmingham offers world- leading dedicated railway teaching and technology development. Railway Systems Engineering and Integration has been taught at Birmingham since 2005, building on the success of the MSc in Railway Systems Engineering taught at the University of Sheffield from 1995. BCRRE has also been a leading provider of short courses for industry. In the summer of 2013, BCRRE, in
collaboration with the High Integrity Systems Engineering Group at the University of York, launched the new MSc programme in Railway Risk and Safety Management (RRSM) to provide the railway industry with the expertise
required to manage accident risk. The development of this programme was initiated and is sponsored by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. In the academic year 2013-2014, a pilot for the MSc is being held in Britain, in preparation for a transfer to Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. The programme will continue to be taught at Birmingham and York.
Academic rigour and industrial relevance Classroom-based teaching is delivered in week-long modules and supplemented with demanding research-based essays and case studies that accompany each module. A final dissertation project leads to the award of an MSc. Also offered are a post-graduate
