Florian Rotberg: “Many projects fail if they are solely IT driven”
Integration and forward planning are the key ingredients to success for any integrator looking to enter the digital signage market, according to Invidis Consulting’s Florian Rotberg. In an introductory session for new market entrants, Rotberg
reminded the audience that digital signage is a combination of two very different worlds: IT and communica tions. This uneasy marriage is one that needs attention, according to Rotberg. “The smallest chunk of a digital signage project, perhaps 30%, is the technology. The largest chunk of work comes from the operational expenditure and ongoing investment that happen over the next four or five years. It’s important to get the communica tions department involved quickly, as many projects fail if they are solely IT driven. The ongoing management of the project is key to success.”

Google just spent $3.2 billion on acquiring Nest, which makes smart thermostats, smoke detectors and door openers, showing that “data will be the business driver,” he said. “Sensors are the key to the future for everything, to which smartphones will be connected.”

Visitors may not know it, but Omnivision Studios is one of the most high-profile vendors at this year’s ISE – not only on its own stand but on the stands of many exhibitors. Its Omnitapps multi-touch Wayfinding software also drives the touchscreen ISE information kiosks all around the showfloor, which have returned this year after a successful debut in 2013 and will also appear at ISE 2015.
The simple user interface hides a complex data set, which includes the dimensions and positions of each booth in the show, a directory of every vendor, and simple navigation instructions to help visitors navigate the challenging routes through the RAI. “Our offline Wayfinding is installed in 22 locations here at ISE,” said Omnivision CEO Alexander Aelberts.
