2013 WAS QUITE A YEAR for British Airways, with the introduction of both the A380 and the B787 Dreamliner. These aircraft are part of a wider plan which will see the airline spend some £5 billion between now and 2017, with BA taking delivery of new aircraft at the rate of one a fortnight through 2014. This is good news on a number of levels. It means that as the A380s arrive, BA can retire some of its ageing B747-400 jumbojets, and as the Dreamliners are added, the B767s will retire. This will also have the effect of gradually lowering the age of the BA fleet, which currently stands at an average of 13 years. EASYJET INTRODUCED allocated seating across its route network in 2013, allowing passengers to upgrade for extra legroom seats and choose where they sit. The airline offers fast-track security access through airports as an extra benefit for those buying Flexi fares, which are aimed at the corporate market. These tickets offer the flexibility to change travel dates, as well as a choice of seats at the front of the plane, Speedy Boarding, no booking fees and a free checked-in bag. Fast-track has been rolled out to 41 airports so far, which Easyjet attributes to more than half of its total business network.
