UNITED OPERATES a mix of B747-400s, B757s, B767s and B777-200s on its daily flights from the UK to the US. These are in either three classes (economy, premium economy and business) or four classes (as before, plus first). With such a big fleet – a large part of which was formerly Continental Airlines’ – it’s not surprising that


there’s a certain amount of inconsistency in the onboard product, though most business class seats are fully- flat. In 2013, United began to offer wifi on certain long-haul routes. It has also begun to receive its 65 B787 Dreamliners, but there are no current plans for these to serve Heathrow.  Visit www.united.com

IT HAS BEEN ANOTHER year of significant change for Virgin Atlantic. In 2013, Delta Air Lines purchased Singapore Airlines’ 49 per cent stake in the British carrier, and from the end of March Virgin will offer a combined schedule on its US services with Delta. In April 2013, Virgin launched short-haul brand, Little Red, offering domestic UK services from London


to Manchester, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Little Red uses A320 aircraft wet-leased from Aer Lingus, but the livery is Virgin and the staff Virgin-trained.  Visit www.virgin-atlantic.com
