Wellness Tourism Congress announced for GSWS 2013
US/India: A dedicated Global Wellness Tourism Congress is to be held in conjunction with the 2013 Global Spa and Wellness Summit (GSWS) at The Oberoi, Gurgaon, from 5-7 October. The congress will take place on the fi rst day of the invitation-only
GSWS, with ministers for tourism meeting global tourism leaders to discuss the best strategies for encouraging growth in wellness travel. On the agenda will be case studies to illustrate successful national wellness tourism campaigns, as well as the fi ndings of SRI International’s new research into the predicted future growth of the global wellness tourism sector. Ophelia Yeung, Co-Director of the Center for Science, Technology
and Economic Development at SRI International, said: “Wellness tourism is a market that has explosive growth potential given the demographic, economic and lifestyle trends in both high-income and rapidly developing countries.” However, she added: “Too few industry stakeholders and
consumers fully understand this new travel category, leading to missed opportunities for both. By defi ning the size and impact of global wellness tourism – and identifying best promotional practices – this congress and new research will educate, and reverberate with governments and wellness businesses around the world.”

UK: A £1m public sector spa has opened in St Albans, Hertfordshire, as part of the council’s new £24m Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre. Situated within the 100-acre Verulamium Park, the standalone spa and its interiors were designed by S&P Architects. Explaining the inspiration behind the spa’s design, Christine-Alice Hartigan, Head of Spa and Wellness at S&P Architects, said: “The main aspirations were to absorb and to echo the heritage of Verulamium Park in the design, layout and fi nishes, and unite modern spa features.” The 600sqm spa has fi ve treatment rooms, each featuring plenty of natural light, as well as a relaxation lounge. Product partners are ESPA and Clarins.
The spa’s centrepiece is a thermal experience suite, created by Dalesauna, which references St Albans’ history as the third-largest city in Roman Britain. Including a caldarium, laconium and tepidarium, the suite also features a large Kelo sauna, an aroma steamroom, a hydropool and experience showers, while slot windows in each heat room provide guests with views to enhance the spa’s spatial connectivity. Gerard McCarthy, Sales Director at Dalesauna, said:
“It’s wonderful to see St Albans Council refl ecting the Roman bathing principles in their new spa; the Romans would certainly recognise the facilities on offer.”
