ing,” or double shotgun barrels over a single rifle barrel, originated in the Ger- manic countries of western and central Europe and was most popular in Germa- ny and Austria, although even the very staid British occasionally succumbed to the irresistible logic reflected by such guns. In most of Europe, there are no seasons or bag limits, per se. Instead, the hunter is permitted to shoot (only) what the landowner or his “Jaeger” (game keeper) permits to be hunted. On the one hand, this often limits targets to even specific animals to be culled while, on the other, it is often permissible to shoot grouse, as well as roe deer or even boar during the same outing. Thus, in order to be prepared for both a flying target as well as a running one, either two guns or a rifle/shotgun are required. Sometimes this choice of the gun
maker’s art took the form of a so-called Paradox gun, which is a generic term for a double-barreled shotgun in which one or both barrels were either partially or com- pletely rifled, often with very shallow “invisible” rifling. This permitted the use of a shot load or a slug, often one of each in different barrels. This approach was seemingly favored on the British Isles. More often, especially on the European continent, a gun with both purely shot and purely rifle barrels was used. These guns often had two, three or even four barrels and some were quite elaborate, to say the least. A Vierling, for instance, might have two shot barrels, one rifle barrel for a small caliber cartridge such as a 22 Hornet (or the practically identical 5.6 x 35R German round) for both stand- ing grouse and for the rather small roe

deer, and a larger bore barrel such as an 8mm or 9.3mm for wild boar or the larger “Hirsch” or red stag. “Back in the day,” hunting was
open in the northern tier of Pennsylvania for approximately one week for bear, turkey, grouse, squirrel and rabbit all at the same time. I fondly remember car- rying a Vierling at such times, feeling I was literally ready for anything I might see. There were practically no coyotes in Pennsylvania at that time and brer ’yote did not figure in the equation, but very well could have. Eventually, when the light turned
on in my brain, I got the old over-under out of my safe, dusted it off and went searching for the handloads I had
worked up for the 22 barrel and short (2⁵⁄₈ inch) shot shells for the top barrel. (Yes, unlike similar American creations such as the venerable Savage Model 24, Europeans usually put the shot barrel on top.) Now I was ready to fly solo and perhaps slay multiple predators over the weekend, or even the occasional non- hibernating groundhog, should the day turn out to be sunny. I would love to report that I shot a
spectacular double of coyotes the next day, the first at three feet and its mate as it ran across the field 100 yards away, but such things happen only in the recesses of my daydreaming mind. However, on several subsequent hunts this gun, as well as another old friend – a double 16
