and special regulations area which limits firearms to rimfire, shotgun and muzzleloader. The hunting op- portunities in special regulation areas for groundhogs and fox are plentiful, so having an accurate rifle is essential. Reading past articles in The Varmint Hunter Magazine on the Remington 5mm rimfire gave me hope that a rifle manufacturer would bring this fantas- tic chambering back into production. There does not seem to be any inter- est at the present so I will continue to hunt with a Ruger 77/22 Magnum. I have done a number of things along the way attempting to improve its ac- curacy – I installed a Rifle Basix trigger, free-floated the barrel, experimented with various bedding procedures and used different ammunition. The Remington 33-grain Accutip bullet is by far superior. (I actually bought a Hornady rimfire thickness gauge but the rims vary so little that gauging is not necessary.) At times the Ruger would shoot sub MOA groups and I thought I finally achieved success but

then the point of impact would move and accuracy would be inconsistent. Basically, I was out of options with this rifle until I read an article in Precision Shooting Magazine (June, 2012, Vol. 60 No. 2, pages 70-78) on barrel tuners. This article was directed primarily to their use on centerfire rifles but they also mentioned the success tuners can have on rimfire rifles and pictured a Ruger 10/22. I ordered the Super Tune Bar-
rel Tuner and am very pleased with its quality and appearance. This is a well-made, high quality precision instrument custom machined to the exact diameter of the last inch of your rifle barrel. The tuner, when rotated to different degrees, changes the bar- rel resonance or vibration. With this system I am able to tune my rimfire rifle to the ammunition, increasing the accuracy potential. This is a big advantage because with a rimfire rifle we are limited by factory loads. Instal- lation is quite easy; you simply slide the tuner over the muzzle and tighten the two Allen screws. Once the tuner is installed, turn clockwise to screw the tuner all the way in. The tuner is
graduated in primary numbers zero to seven with secondary graduation between. Next, fire two-shot groups for two complete revolutions. This will give you 16 targets. If information is not adequate, additional groups should be fired to confirm the settings. My most consistent 50-yard group was 0.150" on zero setting. The grouping was similar on both the first and second revolu- tions. Pattern location changed as well as the size of the group when the tuner degrees were advanced. The real test was at 100 yards and beyond. The 100- yard group was ¹⁄₂ to ³⁄₈ inch on initial testing and I was very pleased with this result. A couple of months after installing the tuner I had the opportu- nity to shoot at a range with 150-yard and 200-yard targets. The 150-yard group was 1³⁄₈ inches holding between the first and second holdover dots. The 200-yard group was 1³⁄₄ inches holding at the top of the bottom post. At the end of the same week at my home range, rechecking the 100-yard group, my three shots averaged ¾ of an inch. The first two shots were in the same hole and right in the bull’s eye. My scope is a 3-9x Leupold VX-II LRD which has a hunting reticle. Therefore, at 100 yards and beyond it is harder to hold as precise on the target. Groups probably could improve with a fine Duplex, but this outfit is geared for hunting, not for hole punching.
SUMMARY The Super Tune Barrel Tuner has
resulted in a considerably reduced group size and the group no longer changes the point of impact. Over the last three months the rifle has main- tained an excellent zero. This vastly improves precision, confidence and greater success. I believe I am finally done tinkering with the 77/22. I have a sense of satisfaction in completing the project. This was the final touch this gun needed. Varmints beware! ZEISS 8X26 VICTORY RANGEFINDER Finding a reliable rangefinder
