Florida Holds Python Hunt ... a rather unusual varmint

About 800 people signed up for the

state’s fi rst Burmese python hunt, held on public lands in the state. This hunt came about because the

pythons are an invasive species that state offi cals say are decimating native wildlife in the Florida Everglades. Many people who bought the snakes discovered they are not good pets so they released the pythons into the Everglades. Since the snakes are predators, they did what was natural and began eating small animals ... including pet cats and dogs. Such behavior, though natural to

the snakes, did not endear them to the pet owners. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission then stepped in and held a hunt for them, called the “Python Challenge.” Despite the fairly large number of

hunters who signed up, only 50 snakes were killed. A spokesman for the state said, “You can argue it’s not a huge number, but it is 50 pythons not in the ecosystem causing havoc.” The largest python taken was 17.5

feet long and weighed 164 pounds ... a rather big varmint in our view! We wish the state’s varmint hunters

better luck next year if another python hunt is held.

Wyoming Wolves Now Delisted As of September 30, 2012, wolves

in Wyoming have been removed from the federal endangered species list. The FWS approved Wyoming’s manage- ment plan to maintain 150 wolves and 15 breeding pairs within the state. The state will manage wolves in the northwest portion of Wyoming, home of the vast majority of the state’s wolf population, as trophy game animals. Approximately ten percent of Wyoming’s wolf population lives outside the state’s Trophy Area and these wolves will be designated as preda- tors. The state has authorized a harvest of 52 wolves in the Trophy Area.

Texas Hunters Can Now Use Suppressors While Pursuing Game Animals

On September 1, 2012, a new

regulation allowing hunters in the state of Texas to use suppressors while pursuing game animals went into effect. These devices were already legal for exotic ani- mals and there was no reason to prohibit these devices for hunting alligators, game animals or game birds.
