do, I again caught movement in the end of the ditch. It’s another wolf! This one is larger than the first and considerably larger than the one yesterday. He’s very dark, not black but very dark. As he crossed the center of the ditch he stopped and looked down at me. Look- ing through the scope, the size of this animal’s head almost took my breath away. It looked like a lion’s mane, big and flared out from the side of its head. He continued on in the trail of the first. Moments after the second one


walked off, I again caught movement and watched as a third wolf followed suit and crossed the ditch. It was a car- bon copy of the first wolf in body size and color. I could only guess that the second wolf was the alpha male of the pack in the area. After waiting 10 min- utes with no other sightings, I decided to hike a half mile deeper into the woods and try to cut them off. After walking a half mile in and a half mile back, I never found them. But interestingly enough, 150 yards through the woods from where I sat, I found the source of the dy- ing rabbit screams my partner had heard the day before. I found blood, fur and wolf tracks. Apparently just out of sight a wolf had caught his supper. The whole time we were unaware of his presence. I sat the rest of the day with no luck. After dark, back at camp, I visited


with the landowner friend who had come up to cut firewood. He made a valid point, that the wolf yesterday and the three today all came into the ditch at the same spot, and that knowing how thick the underbrush is, there must be a trail there. Sunday morning arrived and I


could hunt only until noon as I had to break camp by 2:00 p.m. I decided to hike down the drainage ditch and set up 150 yards from the trail to try to catch them there. I awoke to heavy snow, an inch or so already on the ground and more coming down. The weather forecast called for heavy snow all day. I found a nice clump of thick grass to hide behind 130 yards from their trail. I quickly got set up and settled in for the long wait. This trip I mistakenly left my bi-
