short Ivy SS rod and fine bronze wool to scrub the chamber. After the final cleaning, the barrels were inspected with a Gradient Lens Borescope to verify they were clean and free from any buildup in the chamber or leade angle. Except for the Ivy cleaning rods, all of this equipment can be found in the Brownell’s catalog. The weather on the day of accuracy testing was typical
for the southwest during the early part of the summer. Once everything was set up, the ambient temperature was in the mid-80s and a light breeze was moving in from the right, crossing the range. It would pick up the flag tails evenly at times, and just tickle a few of them at others, so a close eye had to be kept on the flags during shooting. Starting out with the 27" Lilja barrel, the ammunition
produced an average velocity of 1614 fps with a standard deviation of 14.3 fps, and an extreme spread of 58.6 fps. Out- side of the few slower rounds running in the high 1500 fps range, most of the ammunition was right around 1615 fps, with only a few rounds approaching the listed 1640 fps. This 25 fps difference in velocity translates to a difference of six foot-pounds of energy (fpe) at the muzzle, when comparing 191 fpe to 185 fpe. For the most part, this is a non-issue. Looking at the accuracy on paper, the Stinger was able
to maintain an average of just over an inch, 1.18" to be exact, with some decent looking clusters in the center of the 10-shot groups. Like other sporting ammunition, the occasional flier landed out from the main body, at times almost 0.25" out from the group, greatly increasing the group size. These fliers were included during the group measurements. Switching to the 18" Lilja barrel, the velocity was a bit
higher with an average speed of 1621 fps, but also showed an increased standard deviation of 23.5 fps, with an extreme spread of 93.5 fps. Oddly enough, the short barrel and Stinger combination shot a bit more accurately with groups more uniform in shape – that being round with less pronounced vertical. Of course this also could be related to a tuning is- sue with the shorter barrel. Overall, the 18" barrel produced a 1.06" average across ten groups. During the test I was reminded just how loud the
Stinger round is when fired from a short barrel. Even out in the field, ear plugs are necessary when shooting this round. That said, I was curious as to how much noise a suppressor could reduce, so I switched to the third test rifle, a Tactical Solutions X-Ring fitted with a Cascade suppressor. After sighting in the rifle with standard velocity bulk
ammunition, I switched over to the Stinger for elevation cor- rections and noticed an excellent reduction in muzzle report with the suppressor when compared to just a standard barrel. Shooting the rifle required no ear protection, even with the sound bouncing off the concrete pad of the range. The accuracy from the Tactical Solutions X-Ring was
acceptable, averaging a little over 1.5" at 50 yards, but the fli- ers were pretty far out from the group. In the past this rifle has shown much better accuracy with CCI Subsonic hollow- points, which is what I usually shoot in this rifle. There were no issues with reliability, and this is in part because of the SAAMI sporting chamber in this barrel. For some semi- autos the Stinger works at an acceptable level, but from my experience I’ve come to believe that the Stinger is best used in a bolt-action rifle.
