It is notorious for being swept by a changing wind. I have fired many “4+1” groups there and also many that showed distinct horizontal stringing as a result of the wind. In order to obtain an adequate appraisal of accu- racy, I fired 15 rounds (three five-shot groups) with each type of ammunition except in the case of the Winchester PSP load. As a result, the velocities obtained represent the average of 15 shots except for the Winchester load. The results obtained are shown in the accompanying table. Because a single errant shot does not represent the true accuracy potential, I took the average of the best five-shot group and the best

four shots in the other groups as being indicative of the accuracy of that load. It is interesting to note that all
of the six types of factory loads gave velocities that exceeded the published values. This is not true of factory am- munition in all calibers that I have tested. Moreover, the measured veloci- ties are instrumental values at 10 feet from the muzzle, so the muzzle veloci- ties would be slightly higher. With handloads, my old Rem-
ington 700 routinely shoots groups in the 0.5-0.7 inch range, but not with all loads. As a result, the overall average obtained with the factory loads is com- parable to the average results I get with
handloaded ammunition. So, is the conclusion that I could
get along very well with factory am- munition correct? Yes, if I could pick the load that I wanted. Unless the range is long for the caliber, any of the loads tested would be “one minute of varmint” out to around 200 yards, and that takes in most of my shooting with that rifle. Factory ammunition is, indeed, quite good.
