LOADING THE 243 WINCHESTER:
A PROJECT FOR HIM AND HER James E. and Kathleen A. House
Although both are Remington 700s, “hers” (top) and “his” (bottom) 243 Winchester rifles differ markedly.
were falling into place for us to do a significant amount of hunting of me- dium game. There were already some rifles available to us, but we thought it seemed like a good thing to get a real “his and hers” pair of rifles. After some shopping, we decided that the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 308 Winchester would be about ideal. After all, that rifle has been dubbed “the world’s most beautiful rifle.” Be that as it may, there is no question that the Model 70 Featherweight is a hand- some rifle and the 308 is a most versatile cartridge. So, that is how we came to

considerable number of years ago, we thought that things
own a pair of these rifles. But full power 308 loads in a light
rifle generate a significant amount of recoil. In fact, the recoil was deemed by one of us to be downright uncomfort- able. As it turned out, a store nearby was going out of the business of selling firearms. In the case was a Remington 700 ADL in 243 Winchester, and it was on sale for just over half price. This 700 ADL has an exceptionally nice stock and the metal is highly polished and deeply blued. Thus, this attractive rifle found a home as the “hers” of the 243s. Well, if you are going to load for
one you may as well load for two. An extra shotgun was soon traded for an-
other Remington 700 ADL to acquire the “his” rifle. In this case, the rifle had a matte finish on the metal and the stock was black synthetic, but it was not selected for its looks. However, a few years ago the factory stock was replaced with a Hogue Overmolded model with full aluminum bedding. The addition of the Hogue stock required the addi- tion of a trigger guard and floor plate assembly. Other than that, both rifles are completely as they left the factory. The next issue was the choice of scopes for the rifles. A Cabela’s Alaskan Guide 4-12x was mounted on “hers” and a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x went on “his.” Over the years, we shot a variety
The “his” rifle has a Hogue OverMolded stock that has full aluminum bedding. This is a stock that can correct a lot of problems, and the rubberized finish gives a good feel.
