magazine, I simply prefer an extra. The rifle came with one that works and when I asked my dealer for an extra, he said that he would have to order one. This is no big deal, especially to some- one who likes single-shots. But having an extra, especially when in a field of prairie dogs or ground squirrels, is de- sirable. Overall, this is one of the most accurate 17-caliber rimfire rifles I have ever reviewed.

Night Vision: I had borrowed from Sightmark their state-of-the-art Night Raider 3x60 NV Riflescope to review on this rifle. This unit arrived weeks before the rifle so I had time to use it to peer into the dark of night while learning the position of the vari- ous features on this scope. Then, when I finally could obtain a rifle and put it all together, there was disappointment. I was soon to learn that, because of the bolt design of the Savage rifle and how the Night Raider scope was posi- tioned on the rifle’s top rail, a conflict developed. With the scope mounted, the bolt could be moved upward but not enough to chamber or extract a round. This was a piece of equipment I thought perfect for varmint and preda- tor hunting at night (where legal). After experimenting with it, I considered it to be both practical and effective. So, to actually use it on a rifle, I mounted
it on a single-shot (it also would work well on an AR) to check its performance in near darkness. To mount it on the bolt action Savage, I would need to adapt a rail to the rail already on the rifle, which likely would solve the problem. If legal in your state or for use as a device to see in the dark, here is what the Sightmark Night Raider 3x60 NV Riflescope is all about.
This night vision scope with 3x
magnification is a passive starlight device (does not need any artificial light to function) which is practical to use for varmint/predator hunting or observation. Although functional in low light, in complete darkness its infrared illuminator will allow the user to peer into the night’s darkness, which is even more to your advantage when observing or even shooting where such high tech equipment is legal. Standard is a flip-up objective lens cover, a side rail camera/video adapter rail and a remote control. What is also a nice feature is that the rangefinding reticle can be switched between a red or green color. The only problem encountered was early on, and was corrected when I became familiar with the adjustments in the dark. Once you get familiar finding and using its features, you can focus in close and adjust the image until it is quite sharp. What also impressed me was the quick power up, so getting this unit into action is fast. Plus, its power source (AA batteries) can be found any- where. As to effective range, you should be able to accurately fire at night up to 100 yards. I found that in reviewing this unit at night, I had range limitations. I was seeing and hitting my target at 50 yards, a distance I had to use because of being limited by the shooting range I had access to for night firing. My overall impression is that this is a high quality, multipurpose optical unit that can turn
To be on paper before shooting to check groups and velocities, I put this target at 50 yards and fired. That round was about 3 inches high and one to the left so adjustments were made with shots 2, 3 and 4. Then for a three-shot group (since round 4 was where I wanted it), I fired two more and was amazed that my group was so tight for the three shots. As many shooters have said, Savages shoot!

the night into your advantage and help you to dispatch a few more predators when they believe the night is to their advantage.
