MMR Tree Stand, camo fixed stock field rifle.

MMR 5-1.56 Standard black rifle fixed stock.

270 Winchester through the 300 Win. Mag., for example. Using mil dots and also hash marks both for windage and elevation, the reticle system with a zero of 200 yards is deadly, to say the least. Add the crisp, clear lens system to the equation and you have a system that can reach out with deadly precision and put bullets on target. I have given some added ink to this scope because it is what it is, and that is to be regarded as one of the best scopes on the market to- day. Again, without question, it added a great deal in allowing the Mossberg MMR to show its best side down range. The Mossberg MMR will be of- fered in both a tactical six position stock

model and a sporting class fixed stock model. The tactical rifle has a Weaver style fore-end, while the sporter makes use of the aluminum tube style forward dressing. Tactical also comes with secondary rifle sights and the flat top receiver for glass sight mounting, and sling swivels front and rear.

As these were the very first of the breed coming out of Mossberg, there were still some designs to be made regarding the dust cover addition, and other minor design elements to be added to the finished production rifles. For example, it had just been decided in the area of finishes what camo to use on the painted models.

While the barrels are not chromed

as many are today, they are well made and accurate, as mentioned earlier. What this says is maintaining the rifle is critical in this area to eliminate any problems in terms of accuracy loss or chambering issues. We shot hundreds of rounds through two rifles over several days and had no malfunctions at all. Even lacking a cartridge assist plunger, the heavy return spring on the gun allowed com- plete case seating each and every shot. While I can’t give you any details (as it is classified information) I can tell you that Mossberg is not taking a back seat to anyone in the military class firearms production area. Mossberg is state of the art. I have been through their complete factory operation and have been able to compare what these folks do against others I have visited over the years. In effect, there is no lack of quality, modern methods, and high grade materials in this production camp.

At a price point below $700 and change, this rifle is an outstanding buy for a hunter or tactical skills shooter who wants to get into a black gun at a very reasonable price, but still have a firearm that will serve well. With a second rifle on the way to South Dakota for a long-term field test in some rough country, the final verdict is still out on the rifle. In my mind, though, at this time I see a rifle that is affordable, well- made, and accurate. If you need more gun than that, I can’t help you.
