Farmers work hard to make a living, and any damaged property can be an instant revocation of shooting
privileges, so use caution – and good common sense. You also do not want to cause a loss in farm income or the entire family can turn against you – and any and all hunters.
One other group to worry about and keep in the loop on your pigeon practice down on the farm is the hired help and ranch hands. They can and do show up to work without passing by the farmhouse and learning that you are on the property – until they hear shots. landowners and livestock raisers – the site of many dead bloody pigeons litter- ing the ground. Take a couple of plastic garbage bags with you and double them up before you toss in the dead pigeons and you should be good to go. I recom- mend wearing gloves or disposable rubber gloves when handling pigeons. OK, some folks still profess to eating squab – or pigeon. Given the diseases they carry, and the mess they make, I prefer to shoot them where they are and then drive to town and dine elsewhere.
Pigeons Come Calling
If you want to lure more pigeons in to a site, consider deploying dove decoys. Vile pigeons that see another bird on the ground eating grain simply lock their wings and glide in to take over. Since they are bigger birds that often are more numerous, they simply muscle their way in on food sources. While I do not recommend stopping and shooting pigeons under bridges, if you ask the right person you
sometimes can gain permission to shoot pigeons within city limits. I once obtained permission to shoot pigeons at a courthouse in a small town. With a BB gun and from the cab of my truck with the window slightly lowered, I filled several grocery bags early on two Saturday mornings. Local law enforcement in the town also had been alerted that I was going to be removing pigeons that frequently had found their way into courthouses, offices and judges’ chambers. I was a hero when fewer pigeons filled the sky there after my efforts. You never know until you ask. Another place to seek problem pigeons is along railroad tracks. Railroad yards and any place where trains
wait on double tracks outside of town also can be places where grain spills attract problem pigeons. Scout around and ask questions.
Pigeons are out there, are plentiful in numbers, and can offer some great plinking challenges. With no limits, no license required, and no baiting restrictions, only your imagination can hold you back.
