to remove raccoons, skunks, porcupines, opossums and other common nighttime crop raiders. Check each trap daily and remove all animals from the farm or discard carcasses in a place that’s pre-approved by the farmer.

When required to do so, call, text or e-mail the game warden whenever an animal is taken and show the depreda- tion permit to any meat processor or fur buyer so there is a proper, legal paper trail for each animal that is removed. Always consult with the farmer and game warden when plan- ning to trap nuisance animals and be sure to remove all traps when the farmer is ready to till, cultivate or harvest his crops. UNDERSTANDINGDEPREDATION HUNTING The first thing any Depredation Specialist must realize before jumping into the world of crop damage and depreda- tion is that this is not “hunting.” Forget any ideas of shooting only the biggest bucks, passing on does or fawns, or waiting for Mr. Big . . . all of that “trophy hunter” stuff goes out the window when you enter the realm of depredation hunting. Farmers are not interested in providing you with a constant supply of wall-hangers – they want every crop-raiding pest off the place as quickly as possible. In fact, one farmer I know who allows depredation shooting on his property explained it clearly enough: “If you see a deer and don’t shoot it, don’t bother to come back!”

When multiple species are invading the farmer’s corn, soybeans, vegetables or hayfields, it is possible to run into a variety of birds or animals that are damaging those crops. Once again, don’t sit there waiting for a big deer to come out if there are five raccoons and a dozen crows in the field!

Shoot whatever shows up and sort them out later. With no closed seasons or bag limits there is no reason to be selective or conservative.

Bottom line: Never pass up a shot at a depredating ani- mal. Shoot what you can see and come back tomorrow to try again. Remember, the depredation “season” lasts as long as the crops are in the ground. Be patient and continue making your rounds till harvest time puts an end to the fun. Most common crop raiders show up near dawn or dusk, but because it’s legal to shoot after dark (with lights) it’s a good idea to sit for long periods before sunrise or after sunset to catch after-hour crop invaders.
