the five-dollar bounty being paid by Wisconsin. All this would culminate in the eventual relentless pursuit of hunting them with the scoped, high power rifle. In the late 1950s, the state of Wis- consin allowed hunters, by permit, to hunt and shoot with high power rifles. Each rifle had to be listed on the permit carried by the shooter. Prior to this time, most rifles were equipped with open sights commonly used for hunt- ing the whitetail deer in semi-restricted areas. Very few shooters were really into varmint hunting in Wisconsin then and demands for scoped rifles were relatively low. My formal introduction to the high power rifle was in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict in 1952-54, followed by a few of my own rifles a bit later. It didn’t take me long to realize the benefits of a good scoped rifle in target shooting and hunting the fox and coyote, along with a number of other varmints and big game. As the Wisconsin permit to use a high power rifle was lifted, I quickly found myself scoping far more rifles, along with some exciting cartridges. But there weren’t as many scopes to choose from a half-century ago. A lot of interesting views have come to me through various scopes since those early days. By now enough light has passed the crosshairs of my scopes to easily reach both coasts.

Sightron’s Big Sky one-inch tube SII 6.5-20x50 MOA-2 Varmint/Target scope, new for 2012, has all the features you will need to shoot varmints and deliver pinpoint accuracy from your rifle at all ranges. The new MOA- 2 scope reticle makes it easier to estimate range than the mil dot or other systems commonly used in today’s scopes. The scope has side focus and easy-to-adjust calibrated target type knobs along with perfect resolution.

Since those early days I have had the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate a very large number of scopes at my test range and through extensive field testing. This has been particularly true in my quest for the snow-time canine predator, often shot at all ranges where a quality scope is a must. At the same time the scope often has to qualify as a target or benchrest scope in testing a wide variety of rifles and ancillary equipment where ordinary riflescopes no longer fit the bill.
