New Enzymoplast™ masterbatch accelerates biodegradation of plastics
Q1
Since its introduction to the UK market through Plastribution during 2011, the Enzymoplast™ masterbatch has generated a lot of interest amongst customers.
It is based on a new and unique bacteria/ enzyme-based technology, and can be easily added to polyethylene-based products to accelerate their biodegradation.
know-how, with the input of Enzymoplast Tech Ltd., has compiled some of the most frequently asked questions about this exciting green technology.
Which polymers does it work in? Enzymoplast™
LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE, Polystyrenes and PETs.
Q2
Is Enzymoplast™ food safe? Yes – Plastics products containing Enzymoplast™
are safe, however,
are not as yet FDA approved for food applications.
Q3
Will the shelf life of end-user products be affected? No - Enzymoplast™
does not activate
until it goes to landfill or composting. The ingredients will not affect your product in the warehouse. On the shelf our average shelf life is 18 months, however, we have the technology to control this element.
Q4
Does Enzymoplast™ negatively affect the environment? No – Enzymoplast™
is based on
organic ingredients only, contains no heavy metals or genetically-modified crops and is 100% non-toxic.
Q5
Will the final product be biodegradable? Yes – Enzymoplast™
biodegrades
plastic through bacterial / microbial action.
is suitable for use in Q6
Is Enzymoplast™ photo or oxo degradable?
No – UV light or heat does not degrade products. Polymer chains are broken down by enzyme and bacterial processes.
Q7
Will Enzymoplast™-based products be compostable? Yes – compostability regulations mean that a product must be over 90% degraded within a 180 day period in accordance to EN protocol for cellulose-based product. Enzymoplast™
products
will breakdown in home or industrial composters.
Q8
Will my Enzymoplast™–based product conform to EN 13432? Yes – EN13432 is a regulation designed to protect the integrity of biodegradation and industrial composting. The requirement is for fast biodegradation of products to be converted into CO2 and bio-mass.
Q9
How fast will my Enzymoplast™ products biodegrade?
This depends on the thickness of the end product and on the correct bacterial/environmental conditions. Products containing Enzymoplast™ will start to biodegrade from 90 days under composting conditions.
