from 15-80 Shore A. The company says the products comply with ISO 10993-5 requirements and are FDA Drug Master File listed. MD-200 grades also meet the
requirements of ISO 7886 for single-use hypodermic syringe seals and exhibit low coeffi cients of friction in glass and PP barrels.
According to Teknor Apex, benefi ts for device makers in using the TPV grades include the elimination of the need to predry and improved resilience over some TPE alternatives, while the the low oxygen absorption characteristics can mean improved protection.
Injection machinery maker Sumitomo (SHI) Demag
has introduced its ActiveCell moulding machine to provide manufacturers of medical parts with a turnkey cost-effective cleanroom production solution. “For many medical and pharmaceutical manufacturers a cleanroom facility is often a signifi cant investment, not always essential for their production needs and can be cost prohibitive when looking to expand into niche markets,” says Nigel Flowers, managing director of Sumitomo (SHI) Demag’s UK subsidiary. Comprising an all-electric moulding machine, platen
mounted six-axis robot, Class 10,000 compliant laminar air fl ow cabinet and integrated packaging system, the turnkey production system is designed to provide a low-cost alternative to a full cleanroom moulding facility. Ultem selected for dental trays
Brazilian dental equipment maker Indusbello selected Sabic Innovative Plastics’ Ultem amorphous polyetherimide (PEI) resin to replace stainless steel in its latest range of dental instrument sterilisation trays. The company says it selected the Ultem resin for the injection moulded trays for its better resist- ance to common sterilisation processes, including autoclav- ing, than PPSU and PSU. Compared to stainless steel, the new trays allow more
fl exibility in terms of design while the transparency of Ultem is said to be more convenient for the user. Indusbello is using a number of LNP Colorcomp
custom-coloured Ultem grades.

The robot can be used to remove parts and place them in a chute or packaging system and to perform some secondary assembly tasks.
The moulding area is maintained at ISO 7 Class
10,000 cleanroom conditions by the use of a Max Petek laminar fl ow hood. An integrated AVT packaging unit enables fi nished parts to be counted and sealed in bags before leaving the controlled moulding environment. Sumitomo Demag says the turnkey system is
installed on site by its engineers and complies with GAMP and FDA requirements. Austrian machine maker Engel recently supplied a
custom insert moulding machine for US-based Matrix Tooling, which is manufacturing a 120mm long stainless steel catheter tube with an overmoulded fi tting using an insert moulding process. The 45 tonne Engel Insert 80V/45 vertical machine is equipped with a C-frame clamping unit, two-station rotary table, servo-motor driven injection unit with high temperature barrel, and is incorporates dual core-pulls. Matrix says the production project is still in its early
stages, and the 3+3 cavity mould is currently being hand-loaded. However, the machine has been specifi ed to support future automation of the process, including cutting the catheter to length in the mould.
