Momentum – October 2012 An honour… and an opportunity

It gives me great pleasure to report to know-how magazine that I have been elected to the office of Vice President of the British Plastics Federation trade association.

Effective from last May 2012 I am now active in supporting President Philip Watkins in promoting our industry to the world.

At this time it seems to me that our UK plastics sector has much to offer and much to do: My sense is that a tide of public discrimination against many plastic products is now slowly turning. This is good news and must happen, since the world’s plastics resources are essential to humanity’s manufacturing needs.

Whole countries and populations, for example, are already facing shortages and difficulties in food and water security and containment, in effective transport, housing and other essentials. Plastics technology has an essential role to play in meeting and solving these problems in a practical and economic way. Working in the polymer distribution sector, I am keen to promote the concept of plastic being a precious resource that is a key factor in sustaining the global population.

A second issue that needs some serious attention in our sector is the provision of adequate finance for companies. Here I am thinking of the small to medium sized manufacturing companies

(SMEs) whose future is critical to the future of our country. Sad to say, our banks and finance houses often appear to perform poorly in terms of lending. Frankly our SMEs deserve much better and I shall be helping the BPF battle to make it so.

Finally, I hope to be assisting the British Plastics Federation to make a stronger case for further development of our industry’s skills. Although at Plastribution we have taken the initiative to provide training to our customers, more needs to be done to ensure the necessary skills are in place to ensure that plastics remain a key sector within our manufacturing industry.

All in all I am very much looking forward to supporting Philip Watkins and helping the industry seize its future. I shall certainly report back on the mission in the coming pages of know-how magazine.
