Technical support is key

Dan Jarvis is the newly-appointed Technical Manager at Plastribution, a new position within the company that will serve to consolidate the technical support it provides to both its customers and suppliers.

Know-how magazine spoke to Dan about his promotion and found out more about how he intends to lead its technical resource.

KH: Congratulations on your appointment Dan, what will your first duties be in your new role?

DJ: My first priority will be to get up-to-speed with several aspects of the business, including compliance issues relating to both the REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directives, new product innovations from our suppliers and the technical document management systems we have established within the company.

I will also be making sure that the technical data available on our new website is properly maintained and up-to-date. To date my principal focus has been on our engineering polymers business, so, with my new role encompassing our full product range, I certainly have a lot of new suppliers to get to grips with, and I look forward to working with them all.

KH: How important is technical support to the success of a distributor?

DJ: These days technical support is one of the most important areas of a distributor’s business. Plastribution does not want to be seen as just a supplier of raw materials.

My aspirations as Technical Manager are that we will be in a position to offer customers a “one-stop-shop” – everything from helping with product design right through to tool trials and material qualification. I

want to add additional value to our customer relationships and help to cement the relationship between customer, distributor and supplier.

KH: Do you work with partners to provide this support? If so, which are they, and how will you work with them?

DJ: We already have great working relationships with companies such as Engel and G&A Moulding Technology, but, as part of my new role, I will be looking to extend our partner network in areas such as product design, tooling, polymer testing, machinery and ancillaries and process capability. I envisage working with such companies to provide our customers with a great range of services tailored to their needs and from established and trusted suppliers.

KH: What form of assistance can you provide to customers?

DJ: In terms of what we can offer customers, Plastribution is ready for the challenge! The list of services Plastribution can offer is extensive, but key areas include product design, material selection, product comparison, tool design, machine specification, tool trials, regulatory compliance – the list goes on.

KH: How do you liaise with suppliers?

DJ: Our suppliers are key to the continued success of Plastribution, so we want to ensure that suppliers are as involved as possible with our business.
