Welcome to know-how

It is now 12 months since we re-launched the Plastribution brand under the strap line “we are no longer blue and grey but we are still Plastribution”. Whilst superficially the only visible change is our new logo with the new motto “Let’s make it work”, internally our business has evolved to become more efficient and effective and so better meeting the needs of our market.

An important catalyst for this evolution has been the Supply Chain Management Knowledge Transfer Partnership that we have been running in conjunction with the Institute of Logistics at the University of Hull for the past two years. Whilst the formal project finished at the end of August, we are left with a tremendous legacy, which in particular leaves us fully equipped to deal with the complexities of sourcing polymer raw materials on a global basis to meet the specific requirements of our UK customers. As you will read in the following pages, some of the changes are obvious, such as the strengthening of our Operations Team, but other enhancements, such as employee engagement and internal collaboration, are equally important in terms of developing “best in class” service.

A particular success of the rebranding exercise has been the “know-how” concept within which we aim to share useful commercial and technical knowledge, helping customers to have further success. As well as topical information on market activity, a

strong resource of technical support is available, and we will shortly be launching “Processing know-how” in which we will aim to provide some of the very best advice for injection moulding processing parameters across a comprehensive range of standard thermoplastics.

There is no doubt that the economic environment over the last 12 months has been challenging, with extremely high levels of volatility both in terms of price and availability. Whilst this has presented some tough challenges to processors, distributors, and producers of plastics, overall the UK plastics industry has coped well, and Plastribution has enjoyed further success. In particular, we have seen strong growth in our automotive business, and the new products introduced to the portfolio are performing well. We are also pleased to have the opportunity to further develop our partnership with Sumika Polymer Compounds and improve the service offered to customers.

It is great to see that we have again been successful in our attempts for recognition at the Plastics Industry Awards, with Sarah Watson achieving a finalist spot in the Apprentice of the Year category and Plastribution again achieving a much coveted qualification in the “Supplier Partnership – Polymer Distributor” final. Again, we eagerly await the big night. It is also pleasing to see members of our team achieve recognition for their contributions to the broader society through initiatives such as

Young Enterprise, where a number of employees supported a project at our local school, raising funds for various charities such as Water Aid, and even being honoured to carry the Olympic torch. For my own part, I was again involved in Young Enterprise as the Chair of Judges at the Leicestershire County Final, and in May I was particularly pleased to be elected as Vice President of the BPF, where I will be aiming to further serve the needs of the UK plastics sector and ensuring its recognition as an important component of the UK economy.

We hope that you will enjoy this edition of know-how and through its content learn more about how the products and services Plastribution can offer to benefit your business. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any member of my team for further assistance.

Regards, Mike Boswell
