The HyCAP 3.0 HPP production system uses a proprietary new “non- opening” mould concept

We believe we have strong potential for even more innovation in the future.” Fitzpatrick says this latest HyCAP system uses a new KTW mould technology that features a proprietary ejection system designed to reduce mould movement to the minimum. “HyCAP HPP incorporates a new mould concept that reduces wasted processes and movements by eliminating the need for the mould to open and close, thereby cutting production time and maintaining complete control of the closure throughout the ejection cycle,” he says.


Fitzpatrick says the proprietary nature of the system means Husky is not prepared at this time to disclose precisely how the ejection system functions, or whether it is driven by the main machine clamp or the ejector. However, he says the reduction in mould movement makes a major contribution to the 20% improvement in both cycle times and energy efficiency. “Waste has been removed from the process by


analyzing the complete system and eliminating unnecessary movements. At the end of the day, if you can reduce waste and variability from the injection moulding process this will result in a bottom line profit

improvement for the moulder,” says Fitzpatrick. Further optimisation of the base HyCAP injection moulding machine also plays a part. The latest HyCAP machine design uses a new direct-drive screw technol- ogy and a modified screw profile and check valve design that is said to provide faster plasticising and better shot-to-shot repeatability. Clamp lock function has also been electrified to improve efficiency. The new mould and machine technology will impose some limitations on the types of closure it can produce, at least in its initial offerings. However, Fitzpatrick says it is very well suited to production of lightweight, one-piece closures for the beverage industry, with the company’s early focus on applications using slit bridge tamper evident bands. He says the technology can also be applied in some specialty closure applications. Due to the high system output, early adopters of the


new technology will be companies with high volume closure demands. However, the system has been designed for long term production flexibility through what Fitzpatrick describes as “an innovative tool design that delivers improved economics for retooling or conversion.” The new HyCAP HPP closure production system will
