Global excellence supported by local manufacturing

R

enold Torque Transmission is a division of Renold plc, a global engineering group

with over 130 years’ experience in the design and manufacture of high-quality power transmission products and application specifi c solutions.

Designing and manufacturing a comprehensive range of couplings, gears and gearboxes, freewheel clutches and gear spindles, Renold’s speciality is working alongside its customers to provide solutions to customers’ specifi c requirements. Renold’s design capability and innovation is recognised by customers around the world who require durability, reliability and long life in a diverse range of applications. Operating in a wide range of industries, including energy, environmental, mining and quarrying, metals and transportation, has ensured Renold has developed specifi c application knowledge and engineering expertise to provide customers with the optimum engineered solution.

But becoming an approved supplier to today’s global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) takes more than just a design solution and a single-site manufacturing structure.

To meet the demands of country and regional funding, suppliers need a global manufacturing footprint which provides for manufacturing

and assembly to meet the local product content requirements of today’s major infrastructure contracts.

The Renold strategy of providing an engineering centre of excellence for its key industry applications together with a fl exible manufacturing footprint has been the cornerstone of its recent success. OEMs can benefi t from expert knowledge in the concept and design stage followed by local manufacture which allows for greater fl exibility, responsiveness and of course local content.

Nowhere is this better illustrated in Renold than in the rail technology industry where the engineering centre of excellence is in Westfi eld, New York, USA, supported by the engineering teams in the UK when required.

Manufacturing and assembly can then take place in one of our four strategic facilities in the USA, UK, South Africa or China, dependent on the project requirements.

As anyone who operates as a supplier to major projects will testify, the phasing and timing of these contracts from initial design concept to the notice to proceed can often result in months or years of delays from the original project forecast.

Roger Godso, Renold Torque Transmission’s European sales director, discusses the merits of a global design approach supported by local manufacturing facilities to meet the needs of global OEMs.

Having a dedicated manufacturing facility works when the total global volume of these projects can be processed through that facility, thus ensuring the maximum level of utilisation. However when localisation is demanded by these projects and you need to have a number of dedicated facilities, it becomes almost impossible to maintain a level of infrastructure and the manufacturing capacity available at all times to support the widely varying level of requirements – at times with no work planned or even on the near horizon.

Renold’s solution to this is provided for in its business model by utilising these local facilities to support its other key industries and markets. As a manufacturer of a range of power transmission products, it can support the local market by having a level of business that can then be ramped up when required to support a new or expanding rail contract. In essence, supporting all industries and markets not only gives Renold a constant level of work to sustain the factories but also facilitates an increased level of capacity to support new contracts as necessary.

To this end Renold are evaluating other territories to establish manufacturing locations to further support the local requirements of the global market.
