C


ubic Transportation Systems Deutschland will be co-located at InnoTrans 2012 with


German transport Association RMV (Rhein- Main-Verkehrsverbund) and its subsidiary and prime contractor, rms (Rhein-Main- Verkehrsverbund Servicegesellschaft mbH).


Cubic and RMV have a great story to tell: together they provide the largest web, mobile and smartcard transport ticketing service in Germany, and visitors to their stand will be able to learn how Cubic’s vHGS platform, an integrated, multi-operator electronic fare management system and back offi ce, has revolutionised revenue management for RMV. Attendees will also be able to learn about the benefi ts of Nextcity, Cubic’s integrated transport payments and information platform that will drive down costs and increase effi ciency for operators.


Building a solid support system with Cubic


The RMV network covers an area of 14,000 km2


, has a population of approximately 6.7


million people and a staggering 705 million journeys are taken each year on services provided by the 153 companies that make up the network.


These companies incorporate 33 regional railway lines, nine S-Bahn tram lines and 130 regional and 798 local bus routes. With so many transport operators in the


region, uniting the various processes and fare collection schemes was an extremely complicated undertaking, and in 2009 RMV took the momentous decision to streamline and speed up its fare collection systems.


The end-to-end solution proposed by Cubic was to unite the IT systems of the various operators under the RMV banner and also serve as a solid platform to handle ticketing systems in use at the time as well as facilitating future developments which these numerous operators may wish to implement. This idea proved a success and after a rigorous tendering process, Cubic was awarded the RMV back offi ce contract in November 2009.


Visitors to InnoTrans will learn how Cubic brought its global electronic fare management expertise to the project, delivering a back offi ce with open IT interfaces to external systems – including third-party management systems – that were integrated into RMV’s existing IT environment and ancillary systems. The project was completed and delivered precisely according to Cubic’s original forecast of a 26-month timeline.


“If you consider how many IT-based projects are beset by delays and serious problems, we were delighted and impressed that Cubic delivered on time,” says Professor Knut Ringat, representative of the executive board of RMV.

The mobile ticketing project has been going from strength to strength, with a smartphone app for iPhone, Android and Blackberry provided by Cubic proving a particular hit.


The ‘HandyTicket’ app enables passengers to pay for and download single journeys, day passes and group day


passes for use on all services in the RMV region, and more than one million tickets have been bought since its launch in late 2010. InnoTrans attendees will be able to see how a back offi ce and apps like those of the RMV can benefi t operators and passengers alike.


Nextcity: a vision for the future


The stand will also inform visitors about Nextcity, Cubic’s integrated transport payments and information platform. With cities across the world battling the challenge of congestion and the need to provide convenient transport solutions to a growing, more mobile population, Nextcity shows how operators can manage this whilst becoming a greener, more sustainable society. The Nextcity platform benefi ts public transport networks by using technology to capture signifi cant travel-pattern passenger data to benefi t passengers and transport operators by offering best fare rates and managing transport demand respectively.


Nextcity will give policy makers a revolutionary tool for analysing and applying multiple streams of data on transport and travel behaviour, and being able to infl uence and incentivise people to make the most of all modes of travel 24/7 will not just recover signifi cant costs, but also increase effi ciency.
