Harald Hepp of ABB discusses the new highly energy- saving ABB Bordline Compact Converter for diesel-electric trains with energy storage.

A

t InnoTrans 2012, ABB will showcase its innovative Bordline CC750 DE Compact Converter with super-capacitor energy storage. Building on the strong ABB

experience with

diesel-electric propulsion systems in all power ranges, this new converter generation is a very effi cient and versatile solution for diesel-electric multiple units.

Each converter controls one or two motors independently and one super-capacitor of more than 400kW. This allows a drastic reduction in the size, power, and consumption of the diesel engine. The converter itself is highly compact, comprising the inverters, a 140kVA auxiliary converter, a battery charger, and the braking

the control, and super-

capacitor choppers on a footprint of 135 x 85 centimetres only. The excellent quasi-sinusoidal current waveform for the traction motors minimises losses, audible noise and mechanical stress.

These converters are installed in Stadler Rail’s new broad-gauge diesel-electric FLIRT trains (Fast Light Innovative Train)

Regional for Estonian

railway operator Elektriraudtee. The traction equipment meets the high requirements of harsh winter

conditions

in Estonia. The technology of the traction converters incorporate all proven technologies of the Compact Converters used in Stadler Rail’s successful GTW diesel- electric

articulated railcars, of which well

over 300 units have been sold in seven countries to date.

In addition to the diesel-electric traction converters, ABB supplies powerful traction equipment for the new electric FLIRT trains of Elektriraudtee. The Compact Converters for 3kV DC line voltage are based on the well-proven three-level-topology of ABB with excellent fi eld performance in countries with 3kV DC line voltage, such as Poland and Italy.

Visitors to InnoTrans 2012 can fi nd ABB experts and products on display at three dedicated stands: Rolling stock - stand 101, new Hall 9

Rail infrastructure - stand 306, Hall 25 Service - outdoor display FA/14
