Dave Warner, director of Van Elle Rail, explains why meeting the exacting standards required by rail projects suits Van Elle down (in)to the ground.

ccording to Sir Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England, in an ‘Economy

vs Olympic success’ statement made in mid- August, the challenging economic climate we fi nd ourselves in today is set to continue for some time; however, light can be seen at the end of the (rail) tunnel.

Whilst many competitors are losing money year-on-year or are going out of business altogether, Van Elle is managing to grow market share, increase turnover and has remained profi table.

Although much of this success can be attributed to the dedication and hard work of the staff, the overwhelming factor is the company’s specialism, diversity, experience and expertise within the geotechnical sector.

The standards and requirements of the rail sector with regards to health & safety, environmental factors, quality, time and cost savings are practised by the company as a matter of course, regardless of the project type – and, combined with the investments made in specialist rigs, training and innovation, the transition into this market was an easy one to make.

Van Elle’s in-house design team have been involved in many rail

projects and

understand the unique demands of working on these schemes, all of which require a value- engineered, team approach that can only be demonstrated by a well managed supply chain and the best in our industry.

Mervyn King may have likened it to a fi nely

to become the largest

independent fastener provider in the United Kingdom.

The growth has been achieved organically through exceeding client expectations and through winning and retaining new business by offering enhanced supply chain value.

Quality has always been the over-riding priority – this technologically advanced company achieved ISO9001 approval many years ago – and is a fundamental reason it is still winning major global contracts.

Importantly, BAPP now keeps very deep stocks of a wide range of fasteners used in the rail and tunnelling industries and the company is fully accredited by Lloyds of London to supply ‘CE’ marked products to the new BS:EN15048 and BS:EN 14399. The company is Highways Sector Scheme 3 approved. BAPP Rail began its life as a major provider to both the mining and the rail industries and is nowadays a signifi cant supplier into both rolling stock manufacturers

The fi nal part of the puzzle is for all parties involved to be fl exible, and when problems are encountered, to work together to overcome these with minimal disruption to the programme or budget.

When possessions are involved, timescales are non-negotiable and this usually requires work to be carried out at weekends, overnight, or even, as has been experienced by Van Elle for the past two years on the Birmingham New Street project, over Christmas and other bank holidays.

Many bridges and gantries around the world today are bolted together using products supplied by BAPP, in particular high strength friction grip and tension control bolts.

Through the success in providing high quality service to a varied international client base came an intimate understanding of the systems and procedures required. It is through this diversifi cation process that BAPP understands and, importantly, has access to the breadth of products that are used anywhere throughout industry when two parts are joined together.
