Spring 2012 President’s Message

Glenview Park District Mission Statement: To provide quality recreational programs, facilities and open space.

Glenview Park District Vision Statement:

The Glenview Park District promotes wholesome, enriching and enjoyable leisure experiences that benefit individuals, families and the community.

The Glenview Park District’s Board of Park Commissioners meets on the fourth Thursday evening of each month at 7 pm at Park Center, 2400 Chestnut Ave., unless otherwise noted. Call (847) 724-5670 for additional information or to confirm times and dates of meetings. All meetings are open to the public.

Board of Park Commissioners The Board of Park Commissioners consists of seven elected members who serve unsalaried six-year terms. The board sets priorities and defines the policies for financing, governance, operation and administration of the district.

Dear Neighbor,

With the beginning of the New Year, I, like many of you, resolved to look for ways to live a healthier lifestyle—and I didn’t have to look far to find a number of things at the park district that can help me reach that goal.

I’m most excited about the opening of the 3,600 square foot addition at Park Center Health and Fitness–new Pilates and Yoga studios along with additional Group Exercise and Spinning areas will allow our Fitness Center to offer an additional 30 group fitness classes per week–that’s 120 total, making it almost certain you’ll be able to find a class that’s right for you at a convenient time. Come see for yourself at the Park Center Health & Fitness Open House on Sat., Feb. 25, from 9 am to noon. We’ll have tours, fitness class demonstrations, refreshments, goodie bags and more!

Of course, another key to good health is eating right. That’s why I am anxious to check out the new internationally-themed cooking classes (pg. 62) so I can learn how to make Asian, Italian and Mexican fare my whole family will enjoy. And what better way to know that the fruits and vegetables you eat are fresh than to raise them yourself? We are excited to make available a limited number of Garden Plots for individual use at Wagner Farm this summer. Plots will be assigned by lottery so go to page 72 for all the details and make sure you submit your lottery application by Sunday, Feb. 19.

As I write this message, the unusually mild winter weather has me thinking about summer and all the fun warm weather activities. Registration for Glenview Park District Summer Camps has been underway since early January but there are still plenty of spaces available to make sure your child has the best summer ever. We’ve added several new camps, as well as expanded options for “before and after” camp care and lunch service to make

your life more convenient. Learn more in our digital Camp Guide on our website at glenviewparks.org. You’ll also want to be sure to buy your Outdoor Pool Passes by Feb. 29 during our “Summer in February” Sale, when you can save up to 25% over the regular season price (see page 11).

If you have a two to four year-old who will be ready for preschool in the fall, registration for our Park Center Preschool begins on February 6. Our program has been recognized by School District 34 for providing youngsters with kindergarten readiness skills they need for academic success.

Other spring highlights include the annual Park Center Eggstravaganza egg hunt on March 31 which will be preceded by a new special event, Breakfast with the Bunny. For registration details, see page 49. And don’t forget to make your reservations for Mother’s Day Brunch on May 13 at The Cafe at the Glenview Park Golf Club.

One of the best things about living in Glenview is the topnotch recreation facilities and the variety of opportunities we have to get outdoors and enjoy nature, and golf provides the perfect excuse to do just that. Golfers, mark February 27 on your calendar. That’s when season passes go on sale at Glenview Park Golf Club. Here’s more good news: GPGC and Glenview National 9 have not increased their fees from last year, so you can play golf at 2011 prices (see pages 15-22).

Spring at the Glenview Park District is more than just a season; it’s a call to action. So spring up -- we’ve got hundreds of opportunities to laugh, play, explore, create, learn and grow just waiting for you!
