Taucks on the Road

In celebration of his 80th birthday, 40 friends and family joined Arthur Tauck for six days of fun and festivities at The Fairmont Banff Springs in the Canadian Rockies and the Bobbie Burns Lodge in the Purcell Mountains. An avid heli-skier for over 40 years, Arthur pioneered heli-hiking in 1978 with his friend Hans Gmoser, founder of Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH). Tauck has brought over 20,000 guests to the Canadian Rockies, where three generations of Taucks all feel at home. Arthur’s five children surprised him during the festivities by creating a fund in his name to enable disadvantaged Canadian youth to visit his beloved Purcell Mountains for the purpose of learning life skills. It was the perfect gift.

As part of the 80th celebration, the more adventurous of the Tauck clan took on the challenge of CMH’s “Via Ferrata” course, which is a mountain route equipped with fixed cables, ladders and bridges; it allows a wide range of climbers to master the high mountains without the risks associated with unprotected climbing. Although common in Europe, they are rare in North America. In the photo to the left, Kiki Tauck Mahar and Dan Mahar lead the kids to the top!
