If ever there was a great time to experience the pageantry of kings and queens, along with the royalty of the sports world, then 2012 is the year to do it. London is going to be all abuzz with preparations for the Summer Olympic Games that are scheduled to kick off on July 27 and run through August 12. Hotels might be scarce for the last-minute visitor, but rest assured, we’ve already reserved rooms at some of the city’s best hotels during the summer for our guests. But there’s something else that will be drawing travelers to England next year – the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign. The celebrations will center around an extended weekend on June 2nd through June 5th and what a festive weekend it will be. Royal events and ceremonies are always amazing to behold, not just for the history of the occasion itself, but also for the symbolism, tradition and meaning of the Queen’s role as Head of State.
Among the ceremonial events that are scheduled for the long 4-day weekend, a recent headline in The Telegraph declared that “The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be marked by the largest and grandest river pageant since the reign of Charles II” on June 3, when tens of thousands of people will line the River Thames, and rowing boats, working boats and pleasure vessels of all shapes and sizes, beautifully dressed in strings and Union Jacks, will be sharing the waterway in anticipation of this “once in a lifetime party.” We’ll be there too.
It all sounds a bit like founder Arthur Tauck’s definition of a Tauck trip, a tradition of good times, good friends and good fun that we are proud to carry on for our guests along the Yellow Roads of Europe. Hope to see you there in 2012!
