Momentum is building

Inspired by last year’s challenge and gift by Susan Kettering Williamson ’59, a group of alumni, parents, and friends have put forth a similar challenge to help Skidmore increase donor participa- tion again this year. Launched in Octo- ber, the $1 Million Momentum Chal- lenge offers a combined gift of $1 mil- lion for Skidmore if 12,500 individuals make a gift of any size by May 31. Michael Casey, vice president for ad- vancement, says, “This new challenge reaffirms one of our community's great strengths, and that is the willingness of many individuals to work together for a common cause. It is a truly wonderful part of our communal DNA.” He adds, “These donors understand that Skidmore will only succeed if everyone steps for- ward to do her or his part. They know that we can all be philanthropists, and

that the important thing is not necessari- ly the amount someone gives but rather the act of giving itself.”

Nancy Hamilton ’77, the alumni

board’s VP for annual giving, has been pleased to see the momentum building again this year to raise donor participa- tion. “This chal- lenge will help encourage mem- bers of the Skid-

more community to make a gift every year, regardless of the size of the gift. By working together, we will be able to meet this new challenge.” She also notes that the initiative, if successful, will raise Skidmore’s alumni participation rate to 40 percent—an important number for

foundations, agencies, and college guides that count giving rates as an indicator of alumni engagement and loyalty. A network of volunteers is at work urging alumni, parents, and friends of the College to make a gift and help spread the word about the challenge. Any- one interested in volunteering may contact Paul Bud- long, director of

the annual fund, at 518-580-5629 or pbudlong@skidmore.edu. He reminds potential donors that all annual-fund gifts are put to immediate use to benefit Skidmore’s students and faculty, and that giving online is quick and easy at www .skidmore.edu/makeagift.
