TURNING 10

THE TANG MUSEUM STILLTURNS HEADS BY KATHRYN GALLIEN

SKIDMORE’S TANG TEACHING MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY made a lot of noise when it opened 10 years ago. There was the hammering of last-minute construction, the hur- ried footfalls of Dayton Director Charlie Stainback pulling things together at a dead run, the music and speeches at opening festivities, the news-media chatter, and of course the shouts, whispers, and ringing phones emanating from SOS: Scenes of Sounds. By opening with that ex- hibition on sound, the Tang announced it was a different kind of museum—one centered on ideas rather than collections. The approach was a perfect fit for an academic community like Skidmore’s. In just a decade, the Tang has established itself as the model for college and uni- versity teaching museums.
